Three judges in the design and horticultural professions reviewed the submissions.
- H. Edward Black, RLA, is owner and President of H. Edward Black and Associates, PC, an engineering and landscape architectural firm that was founded in Harrisburg in 1972. Mr. Black has considerable experience in master planning of educational, recreational, corporate and industrial sites, recreation and park design, land development and resource management planning, as well as site study and analysis and maintenance programming. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science - Landscape Architecture, Black is a licensed Landscape Architect in PA, MD, NY, VA, NJ and has CLARB Certification. Mr. Black's professional affiliations include American Society of Landscape Architects - Pennsylvania/Delaware Chapter, Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, SCARAB (Professional Honor Society), American Planning Association, and Harrisburg Parks Partnership.
- Alan H. Michael, Senior Extension Agent at Dauphin County Cooperative Extension Office, Penn State University , has experience in greenhouse and nursery production, a long history of horticulture education and research experience, specifically crabapple research. Michael is a graduate from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and a Masters of Science in Plant Pathology. He has also completed a certificate program in Business and Marketing from the University of Pittsburgh . He is also the Director of the Penn State Trial Gardens . His professional affiliations include National Association of County Agriculture Agents, Pennsylvania Association of County Agriculture Agents, Pennsylvania Floral Industry Association, American Society of Horticulture Science, American Society of Phytopathology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
- Joel M. Lerner, APLD, is founder and CEO of Environmental Design, Capitol View Park , MD , a firm specializing in landscape consulting and design. Catering to residential and commercial clientele for almost 30 years, he is the creator of LERNSCAPING, a unique system of design that matches personalities to properties. Lerner has a weekly gardening column in The Washington Post. He hosted The Garden Show on WWRC-AM Talk Radio in Washington, D.C. for five years; has appeared on Fox Morning News; and was featured in a 4-part homeowner series on TBS, Lifetime's Our Home; has done public service announcements for OPEI (Outdoor Power Equipment Institute); and, served as national spokesperson for the Toro Company.
